How Should I Dispose Face Mask?
Environmental bodies would like us to recommend that each ear loop on a disposable mask be broken at a connection point on each side (they can be easily pulled off) before placing the mask in your general waste stream.
This prevents the potential entrapment of birdlife when masks end up in landfill sites. When breaking a connection point, it is essential that you avoid touching the front portion of the mask, which may be contaminated, and wash your hands and sanitise after disposal.
Single-use face masks have different applications and environments of use, and therefore different disposal methods and regulations may apply. Due to OH&S risks, we are not in a position at this stage to provide guidance on any specific recycling channels.
TerraCycle® is promoting a Zero Waste Box™ for recycling masks that are not considered medical waste. However, Detmold Medical cannot validate how or if they are recycling used masks.
Disposable face masks are not biodegradable due to the materials required to meet critical performance standards. That’s why it’s important to dispose of them safely and correctly to reduce their environmental impact.
